She rejected rigid structures, favoring lightweight fabrics like silk, organza, and chiffon, often leaving seams visible to emphasize craftsmanship. Her designs echoed Japan’s emphasis on wabi-sabi (imperfect beauty) and ma (negative space), while incorporating Western tailoring for a unique hybrid aesthetic.
