Plot summary Emma (Natalie Portman) is a successful, guarded pediatrician who has been hurt in past relationships and wants to avoid emotional entanglement. Adam (Ashton Kutcher) is a laid-back, charming screenwriter recently recovering from a breakup. After a night together, they agree to a “no strings attached” arrangement: physical intimacy without commitment. At first both enjoy the freedom, but as they spend more time together, their routines, insecurities, and differing life plans expose cracks in the arrangement. Miscommunications and jealousies escalate — particularly around Adam’s flirtations and Emma’s emotional distance — until both must confront what they truly want.
