The film begins with Leonard (played by Guy Pearce) killing a man in a motel room. But as the story unfolds, we see that Leonard's memories are fragmented and disjointed. He uses a system of tattoos and notes to hunt for the man who killed his wife, but his condition makes it difficult for him to piece together the truth.
