The book is a picaresque novel, a genre that originated in Spain and characterized by the adventures of a rogue or vagabond protagonist. The story follows Lazarillo, a young boy from Toledo who becomes a servant to a blind beggar and embarks on a journey of self-discovery, encountering various characters who teach him about the harsh realities of life.
