The film is based on the novella "Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption" by Stephen King. The story follows Andy Dufresne, a successful banker who is wrongly convicted of murdering his wife and her lover. Andy is sentenced to life in prison and is sent to Shawshank, where he befriends Red, a lifer who has lost hope. Despite the harsh conditions and corruption within the prison, Andy never loses his sense of hope and dignity. Through his journey, Andy finds ways to survive and ultimately, to escape.
