Gayle's big break came in 1970 when she signed with Decca Records. Her first single, "Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue," released in 1977, became a huge success, topping the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart and staying there for four weeks. The song also crossed over to the pop charts, reaching number two on the Billboard Hot 100.
